Congressional Candidate 5th District Missouri
Dave Lay

George Washington:First President
"Precedents are dangerous things; let the reins of government be braced and held with a steady hand, and every violation of the Constitution be reprehended: if defective let it be amended, but not suffered to be trampled whilst it has an existence."
Benjamin Franklin:Postmaster General
On being approached by a citizen angry that the nation had not provided the happiness guaranteed in the Declaration of Independence. "The Declaration of Independence guarantees the pursuit of happiness. It is up to you to catch it."

George Mason:Father of the Bill of Rights
When asked the meaning of militia in the Second Amendment. "What is the militia? It is the whole people. To disarm the people is the best and most effective way to enslave them."

Thomas Jefferson:Third President
In 1803 upon recommendation by President Jefferson, the United States Congress ratified a treaty with the Kaskaskia Indians whereby the federal government paid for the support of a Catholic priest to the Indians for a period of seven years. This followed the construction of a Catholic Church by the federal government for the tribe. Later that year he said this in a letter to Dr. Benjamin Rush dated April 23, 1803.
"My views...are the result of a life of inquiry and reflection, and very different from the anti-Christian system imputed to me by those who know nothing of my opinions. To the corruptions of Christianity I am, indeed, opposed; but not to the genuine precepts of Jesus himself. I am a Christian in the only sense in which He wished anyone to be; sincerely attached to his doctrines in preference to all others."
